Celebrating Women's History Month

The month of March marks the time to celebrate the monumental women of the past who paved the way for women of the present. Though disparities between men and women still exist today, we as women have made considerable strides in fighting for the freedom and equality we deserve to chase our dreams. The fight is not over as there are still countless women worldwide who have yet to indulge in the freedoms that many of us are fortunate to have. Though significant work still has to be done, there are so many simple things we can do to empower and uplift the women around us; continue on to find out how!

Whether you’re a total bookworm or more of a movie buff, a perfect way to celebrate Women’s History Month is by appreciating some of the many creative works by women! Listed below are two suggestions that are sure to captivate you!

  • The Vanishing Half written by Brit Bennett

New York Times-bestselling author Brit Bennett paints the story of twin sisters in the 1950’s South who although being inseparable as children, choose completely different worlds to live and raise families in. • Lady Bird directed by Greta Gerwig

Greta Gerwig is only the fifth woman to be nominated for Best Director at the Academy Awards for her creative genius in Lady Bird. Gerwig’s award-winning film captures the story of a teenage girl from Sacramento, California who encounters trials in romance, family, and self-discovery all in pursuit of chasing experiences outside of her hometown. You can watch this film now on Netflix!

This small business creates the cutest masks with virtually every color or pattern you can think of! What’s so amazing about her business is 100% of the proceeds are donated to Rady Children’s Hospital in support of children seeking medical treatment. Buy a mask to be not just for women, but also for the kids!

If money is tight and you don’t have much time to read or watch movies, there are still such simple, yet monumental ways to appreciate the women around you! One way is by simply saying ‘thank you’. Whether it’s to your mom, you sister, your best friend, a simple ‘thank you’ can be such a huge way to honor and empower those women who have made a lasting impact on your life. I’m sure each of us have countless women who we hold close to our hearts, but even a simple phone call or handwritten note of gratitude can go such a long way!

I want to finish off by giving a HUGE ‘thank you’ to my fellow Women in Science sisters! Thank you for your kindness, your passion, and your support. Being a woman in STEM is not easy, but your perseverance and drive gives me so much hope and reassurance that we belong in this field. You make it so that young women everywhere can see that their own dreams of becoming scientists, engineers, or doctors, are possible!

Happy Women’s History Month!
